Professional profile

Passionate and highly motivated composer and songwriter with a strong focus on storytelling and theatre, community and collaboration and creating new work for cross-generational audiences. Over 10 years of professional experience composing music for theatre and stage and 25 years in collaborative music making with artists of varying disciplines across Scotland and West Yorkshire, including opera, theatre, dance, film, art and sound installation. Composer and co-librettist of Royal Ballet and Opera’s new youth opera The Wish Thief, created in collaboration with their Youth Company. Supported by established UK arts and educational authorities including The Scottish Arts Council, Creative Scotland and Aldeburgh Music.

THEATRE AND STAGE

THE WISH THIEF (2025) Composer and co-librettist, Royal Ballet and Opera

  • From over 60 creative teams who applied to The Royal Ballet and Opera’s ‘Making Opera for younger audiences’ open call to a final shortlist of and showcase of 3, RBO’s Youth Opera chose to develop The Wish Thief into a full length opera.

  • Devised the original story concept and worked as co-librettist alongside writer Jonathon Ainscough

  • Arranged orchestrations for small chamber ensemble piano, accordion, violin, viola, cello and percussion in collaboration with arranger Matthew Owens

  • Co-led choir and dramaturgy workshops with RBO’s Youth Opera Company and provided pianist accompaniment during research and development stages

BEOWULF (2023) Composer, performer. Proper Job Theatre, Huddersfield

  • Commissioned by Proper Job Theatre and Kirklees Year of Music to compose four new choral works for 60 strong community choir and pipe organ, for their large scale immersive Yorkshire adaptation of the oldest known English poem, with libretto by renowned Yorkshire poets Ian McMillan and Michelle Scally-Clarke

  • Co-composed original soundscape material in collaboration with classically-trained Carnatic singer Supriya Nagarajan (Manasamitra)

  • Co-led and provided pianist accompaniment to eight weeks of choir rehearsals alongside professional vocal animateurs Marie Claire Breen and Jess Baker

THE TRIAL (2021) Composer, Musical Director. Proper Job Theatre, Huddersfield

  • Composed music for Proper Job Theatre’s stage and screen adaptation of Franz Kafka’s novel and directed a cast of musician actors throughout production rehearsals

  • Toured and performed the work in theatres throughout Yorkshire and the North of England

  • Produced, recorded and mixed the film score for screened adaptation, premiered in Hebden Bridge Cinema, Calderdale.

THE DEAD MAN’S WALTZ: Story’s End (2013) Composer, singer/ songwriter, performer. Glasgow Film Festival, Edinburgh Fringe and London Southbank Theatre

  • Commissioned by Glasgow Film Festival with folk-noir quartet ‘The Dead Man’s Waltz’ to create an experimental multi-media theatre show celebrating the festivals opening

  • Collaborated with a team of Scottish writers and creatives on the production, including renowned film director Johhny Barrington and author Hal Duncan

  • Composed several original folk-noir songs and a classical suite for piano and cello to the production, in addition to a live improvised soundtrack on piano to film and spoken word

  • Premiered to a sell-out audience at The Glasgow Centre of Contemporary Arts

  • Selected for the ‘Made in Scotland’ Showcase to perform a string of shows at Summerhall Theatre for the Edinburgh Fringe, receiving four and five star reviews in Broadway Baby and The Mumble

  • Invited to perform at London’s Southbank Theatre for ‘The Festival of Death’ in 2014 following Story’s End Edinburgh Fringe success

RECORDED

BEWARE OF TRAINS Forever Home single release (2024) Composer, singer/ songwriter, co-producer.

  • Composed and recorded the chamber pop’s orchestral festive third single collaborating with Scottish soprano Marie Claire Breen

  • Co-produced and mixed the single with internationally renowned UK Music producer Darren Allison (The Divine Comedy, Belle and Sebastien) and released to critical acclaim.

  • Arranged and programmed orchestrations with EastWest Symphony Orchestration software.

ALL THE WAY HOME EP (2015) Composer, singer/ songwriter, producer

  • Supported by Creative Scotland and ATLAS Arts to compose and produce my debut EP 'Showcasing a palette that spans melancholic piano balladry with a meticulous approach to sound design' (The Herald)

  • Received national airplay on BBC Radio 3 and Radio Scotland and performed live at St. Giles cathedral in Edinburgh as part of the Scot:Land 2016 Hogmanay celebrations.

  • Collaborated with traditional music students at Sabhal Mor Ostaig Gaelic college on The Isle of Skye, in the EP’s recording and production

  • Composed and arranged the work for chamber folk ensemble consisting Cello, Viola and Violin, Accordion, Whistle, Acoustic Guitar, piano and synthesisers

  • Collaborated with Scottish Opera soprano and vocal animateur Marie Claire Breen on backing vocal arrangements

CELESTIAL RADIO (2011) Composer, co-producer

  • Commissioned by ATLAS Arts on The Isle of Skye to compose and produce a one hour soundtrack for international artists Neil Bromwich and Zoe Walker’s Celestial Radio, broadcast from a sailing boat covered in 60,000 mirrored tiles ‘reflecting and projecting the islands mythologies and landscapes.'

  • Collaborated with sound artist Hector Macinnes on the production of the broadcast aired on regional and national radio BBC Scotland

  • Celestial Radio was later turned into a sixty-minute film premiering in 2012 at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney

DEATH AS A NEW BEGINNING (2013) A balletic suite for piano and cello. Composer, film director and producer

  • Supported by Creative Scotland to compose a classical soundtrack for a contemporary balletic short film, starring and choreographed by Eve Mutso and Tama Barry of Scottish Ballet

  • Collaborated with music technology students of Forth Valley College in Stirling on the recording and mixing of the balletic piano and cello suite

  • Directed and produced the balletic short film in collaboration with renowned Scottish film director Johnny Barrington

  • Premiered the piece at Glasgow’s CCA for the Glasgow Film Festival as part of The Dead Man’s Waltz multi-media show Story’s End

THE DEAD MAN’S WALTZ (2011) Composer, singer/ songwriter, co-producer

  • Composer, accordionist and pianist on the folk-noir quartets critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, receiving four star reviews in The Skinny and Scottish Herald

  • Devised the storyboard and co-directed the music video for the bands first album single ‘Cry on Me’ composed by Hector Macinnes, collaborating with film-maker Johnny Barrington. The film was featured at the 2014 Alchemy film and Arts festival.
